Toothache on the Weekend? Here is what you do

A toothache always seems to strike at the worst possible time, especially over the weekend when finding a dentist can be difficult! Whether it’s a dull, throbbing ache or sudden, sharp pain, knowing how to manage a toothache at home can help you stay comfortable until you receive professional dental care.

At Dental Kraft Mitcham, we understand how stressful unexpected dental pain can be. Here’s what you should know.

What Causes a Sudden Toothache?
  • Tooth decay: Cavities that reach deeper layers of the tooth can cause significant discomfort.
  • Cracked or broken teeth: Even small cracks can expose sensitive areas.
  • Dental infections: An infected tooth or dental abscess may cause throbbing pain and swelling.
  • Wisdom teeth: Partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause pain and gum inflammation.
  • Lost fillings: Exposed tooth surfaces may become sensitive to temperature and pressure.
5 Ways to Relieve Toothache at Home

If you’re struggling with tooth pain over the weekend, these simple steps may provide temporary relief.

  1. Rinse with warm salt water
Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Gently rinse your mouth to help soothe irritated gums and keep the area clean.
  2. Apply a cold compress
Place an ice pack wrapped in a towel against your cheek for 10–15 minutes to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
  3. Take appropriate pain relief
Over-the-counter pain medications, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may help. Follow the dosage instructions and check with a pharmacist if you’re unsure whether they’re suitable for you.
  4. Avoid certain foods
Stay away from excessively hot, cold, hard or sugary foods. Try chewing on the opposite side of your mouth.
  5. Maintain good oral hygiene
Continue brushing gently and carefully floss to remove any trapped food around the painful area.

When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

A toothache shouldn’t be ignored, particularly if the pain is severe, persistent or accompanied by swelling, fever or difficulty opening your mouth.

If you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, or rapidly spreading facial swelling, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Remember that home remedies provide temporary relief but don’t treat the underlying cause of toothache.
